These are my picks (complete with the reason for my choice) for the movies
coming to theaters in March, but feel free to check out all of March's
week of March 2
Synopsis: Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to 'Sparrow School'
a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a
weapon. But her first mission, targeting a CIA agent, threatens to
unravel the security of both nations.
Why? I'll watch just about anything with Jennifer Lawrence in it.
Synopsis: A family man becomes a vigilante killing machine when his
family is violently attacked by robbers.
Why? Although I haven't seen any of them in years, I remember
those old Charles Bronson movies fondly. I'm looking forward to
this remake.
week of March 9
Synopsis: After the disappearance of her scientist father, three peculiar
beings send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him.
Why? It's a Disney movie with an all-star cast in a fantastical setting.
What's not to like?
Synopsis: A family staying in a secluded mobile home park for the night
are visited by three masked psychopaths, to test their every limit.
Why? I'm just a sucker for movies like this.
Synopsis: GRINGO, a dark comedy mixed with white-knuckle action and
dramatic intrigue, explores the battle of survival for businessman Harold
Soyinka (David Oyelowo) when he finds himself crossing the line from
law-abiding citizen to wanted criminal.
Why? The trailer makes it seem pretty funny, but the real draw
week of March 16
Synopsis: Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing
adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself
on the island where her father disappeared.
Why? While I enjoyed the Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina
Jolie, I'm really looking forward to this take on the character.
Additionally, I've become a big fan of Alicia Vikander over the last
few years. It's also nice to see, even though it would be true to the
video game character, they aren't using short shorts to entice male
viewers.
week of March 23
Synopsis: Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako
Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert
and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat.
Why? While I really enjoyed the first Pacific Rim, there's just
something about this one… I can't quite put my finger on it.
Maybe it's just the ridiculous scenes in the trailer where they are
posing while being faced with unimaginable danger. Maybe it's
that scene with the girl standing around gawking while being
surrounded by explosions. Maybe it's that I feel like I've already
guessed the plot of the movie. All that being said, I'm sure I'll
go see it.
Synopsis: Set in Japan, Isle of Dogs follows a boy's odyssey in search
of his dog.
Why? It's one of my favorite directors with his typical cast of
actors. This is a must-see for me!
Synopsis: A young woman is involuntarily committed to a mental institution,
where she is confronted by her greatest fear--but is it real or a product of
her delusion?
Why? Another one of my favorite directors, and I really love this concept.
week of March 30
Synopsis: When the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies,
he releases a video in which he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter
Egg, which will give the finder his fortune. Wade Watts finds the first clue
and starts a race for the Egg.
Why? This looks fantastic, and I'm excited about all those pop
culture references from my childhood that I saw in the trailer.
I always think it's great when a movie is able to make use of
different properties.
