October 2015 Movie Guide

Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in Pan

These are my picks (complete with the reason for my choice) for the movies coming to theaters in October, but feel free to check out all of October's releases by visiting the Internet Movie Database's Coming Soon page.

week of October 2

apparently, Matt Damon has some great quotes in The Martian
Director: Ridley Scott
Why? Great director, phenomenal cast, and an intriguing concept.

Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro in ‘Sicario’ dir. Denis Villeneuve
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Why? Another movie with a great cast, and it looks like it'll be very intense. (Yeah, I mentioned this movie last month also. Apparently it got pushed back.)

week of October 9 (Hey, that's my birthday!)

Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas in Knock Knock
Director: Eli Roth
Why? Imagine your wildest fantasies come true and then all of a sudden things go really really wrong. That's the best I can imagine that's happening here.  Plus, Keanu has made quite a comeback recently.  You saw John Wick, right?

Director: Joe Wright
Why? This seems like an interesting take on Peter Pan with the villain being Blackbeard and Hook being a friend.  And we not only get Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, but Cara Delevingne will be playing a mermaid. [related]

Taissa Farmiga in The Final Girls
Why? Imagine that your mom was a scream queen and when you go to see a screening of one of her old movies, you get sucked in.

week of October 16

Director: Rob Letterman
Why? Admittedly, I've never been the biggest Goosebumps fan since I didn't discover the books as a child, but this movie looks fun.

Crimson Peak fan art
Why? del Toro knows how to tell a good scary story.

Room (16 October 2015) Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay
Director: Lenny Abrahamson
Why? With the recent news stories of women being held in captivity for years, this story seems relevant.

week of October 23

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension stills
Director: Gregory Plotkin
Why? I absolutely love this franchise, and I'm anxious to find out how they're going to wrap up the story.

Director: Breck Eisner
Why? It's hard to deny that Vin Diesel is a pretty good ass-kicker.  Plus, I think most Game of Thrones fans would agree that it's great to see Rose Leslie on screen again.

Bill Murray and Kate Hudson in Rock The Kasbah
Director: Barry Levinson
Why? Bill Murray.

week of October 30

Sarah Dumont in Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

Why? This movie looks like it'll be a lot of fun.  Horror comedies usually are.  Check out the red band trailer to see for yourself.
